A Fantastic Spanish Easter Sweet: Torrijas
If you want to try a great Spanish Easter specialty, it’s time to make torrijas!
Torrijas are delicious sweet toasts with sugar and cinnamon or honey.
They are typical Easter sweets that can be made in a number of different ways.
Despite the possible variations, it’s important to choose the right white bread, with a thin crust and a dense crumb.
This will guarantee a great result!
As you have plenty of time at home, why don’t you make it for Easter?
It would be a lovely way to spend some time with your family or flatmates!
So let’s see what you need!
1 barra de pan de un dia o dos antes –> 1 bar of slightly stale bread
3-4 huevos –> 3-4 eggs
750 ml de leche –> 750 ml of milk
160 g de azucar –> 160 g of sugar
1 trozo de piel de limón –> 1 piece of lemon peel
1 ramita de canela –> 1 twig of cinnamon
1/5 vaina de vanilla –> 1/2 vanilla pod
aceite de oliva virgen extra –> extra virgin olive oil
canela en polvo –> ground cinnamon
Ready to make torrijas!
Put milk, sugar, lemon peel, cinnamon and vanilla in a pot on medium heat.
When it’s about to boil switch the heat off, cover the pot and let infuse the ingredients.
Let the milk cool down and then put it in a large pan.
Beat the eggs, add 2-3 spoons of flavoured milk and mix.
Slice the bread 1-2 cm thick and put abundant extra virgin olive oil in a pan.
Soak the slices of bread in the infused milk, then dig them in the eggs mixture.
After that, fry them until brown and crisp flipping them halfway.
Let them rest on paper towel to absorb oil in excess.
Sprinkle them with a mix of sugar and ground cinnamon and let them cool down.
Your torrijas are ready to enjoy!
