Sierra Nevada: Discover The Spanish Highest Peaks
If you want to discover a fascinating winter destination in Spain, Sierra Nevada is on top of the list!
Situated in Andalucia, not far from Granada, Málaga and Almería, Sierra Nevada includes the highest peaks in Spain, second in Europe after the Alps.
The Mulhacén is the highest peak, with its 3.482 metres.
This area is also a famous Protected Natural Park.
If you like skiing, Sierra Nevada offers the Southernmost ski resort in Europe: 118 ski runs of different difficulty to enjoy!
Apart from skiing, you can go for a lovely excursion around the park or ice-skating if you prefer.
Moreover, there is a real snowboarding paradise: a freestyle park called Sulayr, which offers the longest lines in Europe and includes an area for children and people who want to start practising this amazing sport.
What to see.
The region called Las Alpujarras, on the South slopes of the Sierra Nevada, is plenty of beautiful little villages founded by the Moorish and then conquered by the Catholics.
Their history influences the features of these beautiful towns, where you find an intriguing mix of Islamic and Catholic architecture.
Among them, don’t miss Orgiva, the largest town in the area, with its amazing church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación built in the 16th century after the Catholic monarchs reconquered the area.
In the same valley you can go to three little but stunning villages, Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira, all worth a visit.
What to eat.
This area offers fantastic products and some tasty comfort food that you will love.
Try the Plato Alpujarreño, a combo-plate with fried eggs, Serrano ham, chorizo, blood sausage, pork loin and potatoes, very complete and delicious!
You should taste several stews made with different ingredients and the local migas, a pastoral dish made with the bread’s leftovers mixed with bacon, vegetables, garlic and olive oil.
Well, Sierra Nevada offers a great variety of options to spend an amazing holiday!
