
In Italian we have Articoli Determinativi (Definite Articles) and Articoli Indeterminativi (Undefinite Articles).
We have 8 Articoli Determinativi corresponding to the English the:
il – lo – l’ – la – l’ – i – gli – le
Masculine
- il in front of singular nouns starting with a consonant
- lo in front of singular nouns starting with s+consonant, z, y, ps, pn, gn, x
- l’ in front of singular nouns starting with a vowel
- i in front of plural nouns starting with a consonant
- gli in front of plural nouns starting with s+consonant, z, y, ps, pn, gn, x or with a vowel
Feminine
- la in front of singular nouns starting with a consonant
- l’ in front of singular nouns starting with a vowel
- le in front of plural nouns
We also have 4 Articoli Indeterminativi corresponding to the English a:
un – uno – una – un’
Masculine
- un in front of singular nouns starting with a consonant ow with a vowel
- uno in front of singular nouns starting with s+consonant, z, y, ps, pn, gn, x
Feminine
- una in front of singular nouns starting with a consonant
- un’ in front of singular nouns starting with a vowel
As you probably noticed, the Articoli Indeterminativi don’t have plural forms!
