Congiuntivo Impersonal Constructions in Italian

Italian Grammar Tip

In Italian the subjunctive tense is a currently used form. Rather than stating facts, it expresses doubt, possibility, uncertainty, or personal feelings. It can also express emotion, desire, or suggestions, and can be used in impersonal construction and with impersonal verbs. In this post we focus on this particular aspect.

We use the congiuntivo after impersonal verbs followed by the conjunction che, such as

  • bisogna che (it’s necessary that);
  • basta che (it’s enough/sufficient that);
  • si dice che (it is said that)

and after impersonal constructions such as

  • è facile / difficile che (it’s likely / unlikely that);
  • è meglio che (it’s better that);
  • è un peccato che (it’s a pity that);
  • non è giusto che (it’s unfair that)

Look:

  • È meglio che stasera stiate a riposo. (It is better for you to rest tonight.)
  • Si dice che lei sappia cose che la polizia ignora. (It is said that she knows things that the police ignores.)
  • Non è giusto che lui esca ed io no. (It is not fair that he can go out and I can not.)
  • È difficile che loro stiano in casa con un sole così. (It is unlikely that they stay at home with a sun like this)
  • È un peccato che non usciamo stasera. (It is a pity that we don’t go out tonight)
